...more about Hughes 49

| This
is the business end of an 18 meter Boatshop-built Nick Barlow-designed
rotating wingmast doing its job. Heading close into light
wind the mast has been rotated away from the apparent wind
to create added lift to the overall sail/mast combination.
Rotation is controlled from the cockpit by two sheets only,
which lead to the quadrant on the back of the mast. Because
of the mast's position relative to the sloping salon windows
we made the quadrant with a solid non-skid surface so you
can stand on it while putting away the mainsail. With a two-part
main halyard there is a pile of line left over when the main
is up. Best to leave it just flaked loosely on deck so all
will come down quickly when sailing is finished. Unless things
are really lively it is not likely to get washed off deck
from way up here. |

| The elevated
helm gives Roger a complete view of the boat and the world
while managing affairs. Lots of big openings to let the breezes
through, but good shade from the tropical sun. |

| The
twin daggerboards on TOU TAI are 14 feet long made of vacuum
laminated carbon fibre skins over a light wood core. One board
down is enough for today's conditions so the starboard board
seen here is in it's fully raised position. The second small
black mark on the board seen just above the lifelines tells
us when the board is down to the same depth as the rudders.
At full down it will only protrude a few inches above deck.
