Visayan Banca 45' (Sea Adler)

Designer: Mike Allen

This was our first "banka" project after previously working with Jim Brown on his Constant Camber prototype banka. Philippine bankas (bäng' ka ) are double outrigger canoes seen by the thousands in hundreds of forms, large and small, paddled or powered and many, in the smaller versions, sailed. Some of them are huge, up to 150 feet. We tried our hand at several as economical workboats or inexpensive live aboard local cruisers. All were powered with Boatshop marinizations of locally available surplus Japanese diesel engines. Small sail rigs were added for "auxiliary" power to the less than reliable engines. We don't regard these as open ocean vessels, but all we have built have given good service in the inland waters of the Philippines. (CC project #4)
